OUR ANCESTORS - FROM TRENTINO TO THE COLORADO MINES

During the late 1800's and early 1900's, emigrants from Trentino found work in the coal mines surrounding the Las Animas County town of Trinidad (Hastings, Ludlow, Primero, Starkville, Segundo), located 15 miles from the Colorado - New Mexico border.  During the 1880's, Trinidad was a rest stop on the historic Santa Fe trail and home to such famous "Old West" personalities as "Doc" Holliday and Bat Masterson.  Additionally, famed lawman Wyatt Earp drove a stagecoach between Trinidad and other southwestern towns.  These mines and those of other areas of Colorado (Silverton, Walsenburg, Leadville, Central City) attracted our ancestors, who worked long days for low pay. The dangers of mining is evident by the hundreds of graves around the mining towns.

Mine accidents were common, and many Trentini are buried at Catholic Cemetery, Trinidad, including my three grand-uncles --

"Frank JOB, one of the best known mine bosses in the southern tier of the state, was mangled and killed in a terrific explosion in the Victor Fuel Company's mine at Hastings late Friday night. ....." Trinidad Advertiser, Nov 4, 1906

Here is a complete transcript of the newspaper article describing the mine accident.  The newspaper reporting during that time was quite graphic, and gives you an idea of the perils faced by the miners in Colorado.  As can be seen, the obituaries written during the early 1900's were generally quite graphic.

Leonardo BanelettiLeonardo Jacob Banaletti (originally from the town of Bronzollo) emigrated to the US in 1891.  After spending time in Ohio, he travelled to Colorado where he worked in the coal mines.  He was killed under a fall of coal at the Herzon mine 14 Sep 1905. According to the newspapers, a dozen men worked for 24 hours trying to get him out, but were too late.   The Herzon mine was about 7 miles south of Walsenburg, and operated by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company.  It closed permanently in 1928;

Giuseppe Jacob Banaletti (brother of Leonardo), killed in an accident at Primero 12 Feb 1903.

The men below attended Frank Job's funeral in November 1906.  They were apparently living in the Trinidad, Colorado area at that time.  Can anyone identify them?
